Automated Curbside Pickup
Beginning in mid November 2012 Humboldt Sanitation will be implementing automated curbside collection. Two new carts will be delivered to all our current weekly customers residing in our service area between Mckinleyville and Big Lagoon. One blue cart to be used for garbage and one gray cart to be used for recycling. Service will be phased into different areas at different times, not everyone will receive their carts on the same day or week. Once a cart is delivered to your service address, we will no long pick-up any other type of refuse containers.
If you live within our service area north of Big Lagoon, automated garbage and recycling is not currently available. We will continue to pick-up your existing refuse containers manually until automated collection is implemented in your area.
We are excited to offer our customers this new service. Please see answers to the most frequently asked questions listed below. If you do not see an answer to your question, please call our office and we will be happy to assist you 707-839-3285.

Q: Why is Humboldt Sanitation changing to automated curbside collection?
A: The County of Humboldt has requested that automated curbside refuse and recycling collection be provided to customers located in the Mckinleyville area. This service is provided to neighboring cities within the county, and the Humboldt County Department of Public Works and the Board of Supervisors believe the same service should be offered to the solid waste customers in the Mckinleyville area.
Prices for fuel, labor and injury claims are driving costs up. Automated curbside collection will increase efficiency of refuse collection while improving safety. Newer equipment will be utilized for this service. This equipment will consume less fuel and produce lower emissions. Manual collection requires our employees to lift upwards of 10 tons of solid waste into their trucks per day. With automated collection, the costs associated with labor and injury claim is significantly lower. It will also improve recycling efforts and reduce the amount of solid waste processed in our landfills leading to a more environmentally friendly program
Q: How will it work?
A: All residential solid waste customers will be supplied with two types of easy-to-use wheeled carts; one for garbage and one for single stream recycling. Blue carts will be used for solid waste and gray carts will be used for recycling. For garbage, simply place bagged garbage into the blue cart and roll it to the curb or the edge of the road on your regular collection day. For recycling, place your recyclables directly into the gray cart and set out every other week on your regular collection day. Humboldt Sanitation then empties these carts using trucks equipped with special mechanical lifting arms.
Q: What size and type of carts do I get as part of automated collection service?
A: We will offer 4 different sized garbage carts; 20 Gallon, 35 Gallon, 65 Gallon and 95 Gallon. There will be only one size for recycling carts, 95 Gallon. All customers who are currently enrolled in solid waste collection service for a 35, 40 or 45 Gallon can, will be provided one 35 Gallon trash cart and one 95 Gallon recycling cart when automated service begins. All 20 Gallon can customers will receive one 20 Gallon trash cart and one 95 Gallon recycling cart. If you are currently enrolled in service for two or more cans per week, we will deliver one 65 Gallon trash cart and one 95 Gallon recycling cart to your service address.
If you would like to request a different size trash cart , please do so by calling our office at 707-839-3285.
Q: Can I get a larger or smaller refuse cart if my first choice does not meet my needs?
A: Yes. You will be allowed one free change-out if you determine that your current cart is not an adequate size. Any additional change-outs may result in a fee of $25 per request. You may request a different size cart by calling our office at 707-839-3285.
Q. Will Blue Bag collection service continue?
A. No. The automated trucks are unable to pickup bags or any type of container other then the carts provided by Humboldt Sanitation. To continue receiving curbside pickup you will need to sign-up for the new automated service. Fortunately we offer the 20 Gallon cart, which is a great option for smaller households that do not generate a full 35 Gallons of trash each week. You may also bring your trash directly to our facility at 2585 Central Ave for disposal.
Q: What will automated curbside collection service cost?
A: The following prices include both curbside refuse and recycling collection:
20 Gallon Cart
35 Gallon Cart
65 Gallon Cart
90 Gallon Cart
Q: Who owns the carts?
A: The carts are owned by Humboldt Sanitation and provided to you free of charge when you sign up for automated curbside service. Your roll carts are assigned to your address using a serial number imprinted on the cart. Please record these numbers in your User’s Guide, which is provided with your new roll carts. This will help you identify your carts from your neighbor’s or if your carts are stolen or misplaced. Feel free to attach a removable tag to your cart with your house number to help easily identify it, but please do not permanently mark your carts.
Q: How do I keep my carts clean?
A: Customers are required to maintain their carts, including keeping them clean. We encourage you to bag your trash before placing it in the cart. This will help keep the trash cart clean. Rinsing your recyclable containers will assist in keeping your recycling cart clean (please do not bag recyclables). Occasional rinsing with soapy water and a hose should keep your cart clean and odor-free.
Q: What if my cart is stolen or damaged?
A: Report theft or damage of your roll carts immediately to Humboldt Sanitation at 707-839-3285. If the damage is the result of normal wear and tear, the cart will be replaced without a charge. If your cart is not serviceable due to damage from negligence or abuse, you may be charged a replacement fee of $75 and a new cart will be provided.
Q: What happens if I move?
A: Contact Humboldt Sanitation at 707-839-3285 to cancel service and arrange for cart return. If you will be continuing service with us at a new address, allow us to move your carts for you to your new service address. Please do not take the carts with you. If a cart is not returned to us you will be charged a replacement fee of $75 per cart.
Q: Where do I place my carts on collection day?
A: Place your carts at the curb or edge of the street or alley with the wheels and handle facing toward your house (away from the street). Be sure there is a minimum clearance of six (6) feet on all sides of the carts, including mailboxes, trees, cars etc. The refuse and recycling carts also need to be placed three (3) feet apart from each other. This will allow the automated truck arm to safely reach the carts and dump them into the refuse or recycling truck. If you find your cart in a different location after it has been emptied, please note where it is located and set out the cart in this new location in the future.
Q: When do I place my carts at curbside for pick-up?
A: Place your carts out for service by 6am on your collection day. Be sure to return them to their storage area on the same day.
Q. What if I sometimes have more garbage or recycling than fits in the cart?
A: If you occasionally have more garbage than will fit in your cart you may place this extra waste in a bag next to your trash cart. You will be charged an additional fee for any extra waste that does not fit completely in your cart, with the lid fully closed. If you will have extra, you must call our office first, so we may notify your driver that there will be extra bags to be picked up at your service address. We will not pick-up any extra waste that has not been schedule with our office. This will help you avoid any charges for extra waste that may be placed near your cart, which was not authorized by the account holder for pick-up.
These bags will be picked up at the same time the garbage cart is emptied. The maximum weight for a garbage bag cannot exceed 50lbs and it must be of standard size: up to 26" by 36". Make sure any extra is placed next to your refuse cart, not on top of it.
Any additional recycling can be brought to our facility at 2585 Central Ave for drop-off or reimbursement for any materials that have California Redemption Value.
Q. What will I be able to put into each cart?
A. You will be given two carts: one blue cart for garbage, and one gray cart for recycling. The materials accepted in your trash cart are the same as in the present collection system. The recycling cart will be used for single stream recycling. This means all recyclables – paper, cardboard, tin cans, and plastic containers – can simply be put into the cart mixed together, no bags and no sorting required. A complete listing of what is accepted and what is not accepted will be provided in the Recycling Usage Guide that is delivered with your new recycling cart. Recycling should not be placed in plastic bags but placed loosely into the specified gray cart. Garbage should be put in bags before placing into the blue refuse carts.
Do NOT force or compact waste into the carts. The heaviest items should be placed at the bottom of the cart. Waste needs to fall freely from the cart when the automated arm lifts the container up and turns the cart upside down. If waste is forced, wedged or compacted into the cart this will result in your cart not be emptied completely.
Q. May I continue to use my old cart or trash can?
A. No. With the automated curbside collection system, only the carts provided by Humboldt Sanitation may be used for refuse and recycling collection.
Q. How do I dispose of a large quantity of solid waste or recyclables?
A. We offer large dumpster for rent that can be delivered to your address. Please download the Clean-Up Container Rental Agreement Form from our website or call our office at 707-839-3285 for more details. In addition, you can bring items directly to our facility at 2585 Central Ave. for disposal at our transfer station. All trash items large or small can be brought to our facility; however, we do not take any hazardous waste.
For Recycling, all items that are accepted at curbside can also be brought into our facility on Central Avenue. We offer a complete full service, buy-back recycling center.
Q. What about CRV (California Redemption Value) recyclable materials?
A. You may continue to redeem your CRV items at our facility located at 2585 Central Ave in McKinleyville between the hours for 9am – 5pm Monday thru Saturday and 9am – 4pm on Sundays.
Additional Suggestions when using your new Carts
• Keep the lid closed when your cart is not in use. This helps to contain odors and discourages scavengers, like birds, insects and other wildlife. It also keeps rain out.
• The carts are the property of Humboldt Sanitation, do not deface the carts in any way, including with stickers, markers, paint, cuts, or other damage that may result in a replacement fee.
• Do not put hazardous materials in your refuse or recycling cart.
• Do not stack bags or other items on top of cart lids. The automated truck is not able to safely empty a cart when items are placed on the cart lid.
• Do not fasten the cart lid closed at the curb. Lids must open and swing freely when emptied.
• Do not overfill carts, lids must close completely.
• Do not pack material so tightly that it might become wedged in the cart.
• Do not place carts close to trees. Consider overhead clearance when placing carts at the curb. The automated arm needs to lift the carts up to empty them.
• Do not place carts too close together or too close to other objects. A minimum of three (3) feet of space is necessary so that the automated arm does not damage surrounding objects or vehicles.
• Do not put recyclables at the curb that do not fit in the recycling cart. Break down and flatten all cardboard and put it in the recycling cart. No waxed cardboard.
• Do not place nonrecyclable materials in your recycling cart. We may inspect the contents of any recycling cart and carts found to contain materials not specifically identified on the list of acceptable materials on the Recycling Usage Guide,or containing materials considered detrimental to the value of the recycled materials will be tagged. We will notify the customer that unacceptable materials were found. Contents of the container will be collected as refuse and the customer will be billed for excess waste.
